George Washington called the troops together at Valley Forge to tell them he had good news and bad news. First the good news. Today you all get a change of underwear. The bad news, Smith, you change with Jones, Davis, you change with Evans, etc.
That’s the message today with this column. I have both good news and bad news. First the good news. The Supreme Court had held, in a five to four split, that the second amendment to the Constitution is in fact valid and we the people of this great country have the right to keep and bear arms. But Ron, what on earth could be bad news after that, you ask? The bad news is that on our Supreme Court we have four individuals who cannot read. Either they cannot read or they are just plain, complete idiots. There is no way that any person with an ounce of sense and judgment could find any other way but to agree with the majority opinion in this case. The language of the second amendment is crystal clear and unambiguous. The authors of this amendment meant it and clearly laid out the fact that Americans have the right to arm themselves.
There are many reasons for this right to be a part of our Constitution but I will not use this column to go into them. This column has another purpose. That purpose is to once again point out the importance of elections.
With this decision by the Court, we came within one vote of the destruction of the Constitution of the United States of America. That’s right, one vote. So you don’t think who is elected to the Congress or the White House is important? This should for now and forevermore clearly prove that importance.
The Mayor of Chicago has decided that they will just re-write their ordinance to further challenge this Court decision. People like Daley just don’t get it. Gun control laws do nothing to prevent bad guys from getting guns. They only make their good citizens vulnerable. Here’s the rule. The only way to stop a gun is with a gun. If the thugs and gang bangers in Chicago had to face armed citizens they may well be a bit more cautious. The Daleys and the Bloombergs of this country will probably never get it. They are just political animals who play on the sympathy of what they believe to be their base with no regard to the Constitutional rights of all the citizens. To hell with the Constitution, let’s just put into place “feel good” legislation that will guarantee my re-election.
I am issuing a challenge to all of you who read this. Let us get rid of these morons who would re-arrange the laws of this country to suit themselves. A five to four decision is just too close for comfort. Sure, America won this one but what is going to happen the next time? How long will it take for another group of so-called do-gooders to bring another lawsuit? Will this country be fortunate enough to have in place a Supreme Court that is composed of true Americans or will it be packed with political animals from the left hell-bent on destroying this country and our Constitution? As for me, I don’t want to be around for that.
I hope you will take to heart this message and spread the word that we came within an inch of Constitutional destruction. Next time we may not be so lucky. In the meantime, keep your powder dry. Oh, and keep an extra set of underwear nearby. You never know.

THE BLAME GAME
(The following was published in the Newsleader on June 25, 2010)
Barak Obama is no more responsible for the problem in the Gulf of Mexico than George Bush was for Hurricane Katrina. For some reason the media seems to believe that constant screaming about this oil spill will somehow take care of it. The Congress, in their questionable wisdom, has held hearings where BP’s CEO Hayward was “raked over the coals” and “taken to the woodshed” as a punishment for BP’s actions. Did any of this stop the oil spill? Did the hearings clean up any of the beaches? Was anything positive accomplished by these immature reactions? Clearly the answer is no.
This is called the “blame game”. One political party thinks they might get an advantage over the other party if they can somehow taint them with the latest crisis. I tried to watch some of the hearings and to be honest, they were tiring. They were ridiculous. We had bombastic loud mouths from both parties looking for TV face time at the expense of an individual who seemed unconcerned and totally unaffected by the attacks. All the while, nothing was done to take care of the problem.
As a private citizen here is what I want from anyone who can accomplish it, PLUG THE DAMN LEAK!!!! After it is repaired, then we can set about affixing blame and securing financial solutions for both the environment and the people who have been adversely affected. Everything is not about politics. Everything is not about getting an advantage. Sometimes it is just about dealing with the situation until it is solved.
This should not be news to you. We are a petroleum based economy. Most of our products and services are in some way related to oil. From the food we eat to the cars we drive to the clothes we wear to the medicines we take. That is just how it is. As for me, I would love to have alternate forms of energy. I would love to tell the Middle East and Venezuela to stuff it. I dislike the smell of burning oil. I detest the sight of diesel trucks fouling the air with their exhaust pipes belching black smoke. I hate being at the mercy of two bit dictators from third world countries. The fact is we have little choice right now. Hopefully, at sometime in the future, we won’t be so dependent on petroleum, but alas that is well into the future. Today we must do what is necessary to take care of our existing needs. We can’t wish it away.
I would love to never have to tempt fate by drilling in the ocean or in the wild areas of this great country, but the facts are we need the oil. We can’t just snap our fingers and have things suddenly change.
I don’t have the solutions, but I know what doesn’t work. Television broadcasts of inane hearings starring your favorite Congressperson who cares only about getting publicity on camera is an example of what doesn’t fix anything. Twenty-four hour coverage of a spill pouring out into the environment doesn’t plug the hole.
The time has long since come for the adults to step up and deal with the reality of the situation. Stop the poisonous rhetoric. Get the experts together, not in some cozy air conditioned hotel, but at the scene of the disaster. Come up with the fix and don’t leave until you do. This ain’t politics. This is real life. Set about to immediately inspect every single well currently pumping in the Gulf. If they have the necessary systems in place to deal with a similar problem, let them produce. If they don’t, shut them down until they do.
One final thought. Any regulator or official or politician who is found to be in bed with any oil company should be prosecuted without mercy. The facts are clear. Oil companies have been pumping for years with few major incidents. When properly regulated and inspected, they should be able to continue. We need them. We need their product. Knee-jerk reaction accomplishes nothing. We need intelligent well thought out solutions. It is way past time.

JUNE MORON OF THE MONTH
You've all heard this. "It is better to sit around looking like an idiot than to open your mouth and remove all doubt." I mention this because it perfectly describes our honoree for June. I know that it's early in the month but this couldn't wait. This month's choice for "Moron of the Month" is none other than aging rocker, Paul McCartney.
I have written before about so-called celebrities who use their "star status" to inflict upon the rest of the world their usually lame opinions and political preferences. The fact is it's a free country. Americans can and do opine on a regular basis about all things which might disturb them. From the Dixie Chicks, to Bruce Springsteen to John Cougar Mellencamp. I don't have to like their opinions and I don't have to buy their music. The fact is I do like the Dixie Chicks but I do not go to them as an intellectual or political exercise. I do not look to them for political opinion or solutions to world problems. No I look to them for music, plain and simple.
So, you ask, what is my problem with Sir Paul? He was honored recently at the Library of Congress with the Gershwin award for song writing. In accepting this award on American soil this British subject said that it was a great honor to accept this award and particularly in the Library of Congress. His comments were something like this. It is good we now have, after eight years, a President who knows what a library is. Paul, Obama is President of the US, not Great Britain. He is not your President. Further, George Bush was not your President either. You are not a part of we. I don't know or care what your educational background is but I'm pretty sure it doesn't include an MBA from Harvard. You and your pathetic liberal friends are getting very tiresome with your continued criticism of a man whose shoes you couldn't shine.
To me this is yet another example of the fact that money and success in a particular field of entertainment as well as heavy involvement in many different types of illegal drugs, does not infer upon anyone intelligence or class. McCartney made millions selling records to Americans. Now as a senior citizen, he seems to believe that he is also somehow qualified to instruct us on whom we should elect as our leaders. Sir Paul has done more to isolate himself from his so-called fan base in one quick moment than all he has done in a lifetime of performing. Just another pitiful moron.
Comments like McCartney's and others are not funny. They're not evidence of intellect and they certainly are not examples of class. The American people will elect their leaders and they will change that leadership when they feel so inclined. The absolute last thing we need is assistance from an aging has-been rock and roll artist, especially when he is not even a citizen of this country.
For the record, I believe we Americans have the absolute right to criticize our government and our leaders. I believe we have the absolute right to opine in writing even if it shows the world that we might just be morons too. After all, I am offering by this writing my opinion. That is my right. As my reader you have the right to accept or reject my opinions. It is another matter entirely though, when a citizen from another country comes here to American soil and criticizes our government. Whether that criticism comes from a rock and roll singer or a Mexican President, it shows no class.

MAY MORON OF THE MONTH
It is that time again. It is the time I must select this month's moron of the month. Once again this dubious honor must be shared. It is just impossible narrowing it down to one.
Number one on this month's hit parade is Richard Blumenthal, Democrat, Attorney General, Connecticut, and candidate for US Senate. I am sure you have all heard of this guy. Added to his long list of accomplishments we must now add liar. Blumenthal has, on several occasions, attempted to pad his resume by stating he was in Vietnam during war time. That has been proven to be a lie. He evidently believes by suggesting he was a combat veteran, he would be more acceptable to the electorate. Well he has been caught. Initially he tried to weasel out of it through denials but, alas, it didn't work. He had to face the press and admit that he lied. Here comes the strange part. This was his excuse. He said that on the hundreds of occasions that he spoke, he only lied about his wartime service a few times. Look how many times he didn't lie. That, he supposed, should have made it okay. Let's say that I, having met hundreds of people, only killed a few of them. Does that make me any less a murderer? Look how many I didn't kill. Is Blumenthal, having lied only a few times, any less a liar? All combat veterans who did risk their lives for their country should be up in arms. Here is the State of Connecticut's top law enforcement officer and he is a proven liar. He should be ashamed and ashamed to the point of removing himself from office as well as dropping out of any run for the senate. That, my friends, is a true moron.
Now Ron, you ask. Who could be so moronic as to be on an equal footing with Blumenthal for this month's honor? The answer to that is the people of Connecticut. Polls have shown that even after Blumenthal's admissions, his poll numbers have increased. His lead over his nearest competitor has grown. I guess the people who inflicted Chris Dodd on this country would think nothing of once again electing a proven liar as his replacement. All across America people are looking for ways to clean house and rid the Congress of crooks and liars and the people of Connecticut are considering reinfecting the Senate with the likes of Richard Blumenthal. God help us all.
You know this is really simple. We have elections to hire (select) our representatives. They are elected to be our voices in Washington and reflect our views. They should be above reproach. They should be solid citizens. They should be the epitome of squeaky clean. What in the world are the people of Connecticut thinking? Is Blumenthal an example of the people of Connecticut? Wake up. He has shown you who he is and what he is capable of. How can he be trusted by anyone?
Elections have consequences. It would be bad enough if one state elected a crook to the Senate just for their representation, but it doesn't end there. They wind up being involved with laws that affect all of us. If this clown makes it to the US Senate it will be a sad day for the entire country.

THE TROUBLE WITH SOCIALISM
"The trouble with Socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money". That, of course, was a famous quote by Margaret Thatcher, former Prime Minister of Great Britain. It was true when she said it and it is true today. One needs to look no farther than Greece or even Spain to see what this quote is all about. In fact all of Europe is in a similar situation.
Let us consider Greece for example. Greece is a prime example of European Socialism. One in five employed persons works for the government. That folks is 20% of the employed work force. Normal retirement age in Greece is 54. Greece enjoys socialized medicine. The Greek billionaires, of which there are several, often pay no taxes on their income or holdings. They hide that income and their assets in off shore accounts. It has been reported that most if not all of them enjoy cozy relationships with the governing officials who would otherwise be after them for their delinquencies. Now it would seem that the chickens have come home to roost in Greece and they are probably not alone in their situation. Spain and others are facing similar deficits in income and cannot pay their debts or fund their many social programs.
The Greek citizens are rioting in the streets and some have even been killed in those riots. World markets are quivering at the possibility of European default. Greek officials have tried to pass austerity programs to help them get back on their feet but the citizens are furious. Just print more money and everything will be okay. Greece, as a part of the European Union, is a subscriber to the Euro as official currency. Greece cannot just print more money. So what is the answer? How will this matter be resolved?
The EU has set aside a fund of one trillion dollars to help Greece and other member states in the event of default. What this is, however, is not a fix. This is a band aid. This is at best a temporary solution. What has to happen is a complete change of philosophy in governing. It is clear Socialism doesn't work. It has never worked. The reason it doesn't work is simple. For an economy to flourish, wealth must be created. Government doesn't create wealth, it only spends wealth and it only spends other peoples' wealth. Government doesn't generate money; it only takes money away from those who produce it. When those who take exceed those who contribute, the end is at hand. As a part of this European bail out, member states must re-align their priorities and become more austere. They must prove to the Union that they will abide by reasonable measures to help cut their debt and internally fund their social programs. Of course, their citizens will not be happy. It would appear that the gravy train has been derailed and the depot is closed.
I am presenting this essay because it is obvious to anyone who would care to look that we are headed down a similar road. I don't believe that we are in as much trouble as Europe, but we seem hell bent on getting there. In our last election, the winners were of the taker side of the equation. The producers either stayed home or they are now so outnumbered that the result couldn't have been changed. It certainly seems that I, and those who think like me, am in the minority. That doesn't bode well for this country or for the world. If this country goes into default, the whole world is in serious trouble.
So, what is the answer? How are we going to prevent this mess from happening? The answer is simple. We absolutely have to elect the right people. We cannot afford to continue electing these free spenders that have held power in the past. I am speaking of both Republicans and Democrats. There truly is no free lunch. It is clear the so-called elite media is on the wrong side as well. That puzzles me also because they will be among the first to be out of business if the left continues its climb to power. There is no place for profit in the Socialist idea of the promised land.
I am about to reach my seventieth birthday. This will not affect me. It will however affect those I love who are charged with the responsibility of fixing the mess. I think it is going to be ugly, but I think it is inevitable.

NAVY SEALS
Now I can write about it. Now the last of the three Navy Seals has been found not guilty at their court martial. Now I can say that this has to be the dumbest, most ridiculous action ever taken by the US Navy. Three brave, highly trained, efficient warriors have been subjected to a trial where they had to prove that they didn't mistreat a vicious killer who was also our avowed enemy during war time. To the Naval High Command, what in the hell were you thinking? Don't you morons know we are at war? What do you suppose happens on the real battle front? You who fight your wars from hidden war rooms and country clubs must think this is some sort of game. Well it isn't. The enemy really wants to kill us all. They really don't care anything about fairness or "rules". They are capable of lying and do. They don't wear any uniform or march under any particular flag. They are just rag tag killers who could care less about you or your "rules". The idea that these three Seals and also this country have been subjected to this embarrassment has been repugnant to me and most right thinking Americans. Shame on the US Navy, the young man who was the Navy's so-called star witness, and anyone else who participated in this fiasco.
To that very small minority who believe it is important that we, America, must show the world how fair we are and how we obey the rules and that we must prove that even our enemies have the right to sue us for anything we do in fighting a war which they started, I say to you that is ridiculous. Wake up. This is stupid. The only thing I want this bunch of militant religious maniacs to feel about us is fear. I want them to face every day believing that this is probably their last. When we put our warriors on trial for the silliest of reasons as was the case in this action, our enemy is laughing themselves silly. This does not induce fear in this group. It makes us look weak and further causes our enemy to believe that they actually have a chance of defeating us. What nonsense. They need to see the might and the fury of a country who is tired of all of it. They need to see what happens when you wake the sleeping bear.
I am going to make this column very short. I don't give a damn if the Seal hit this enemy in the lip and caused him to bleed. I hope he did. I don't care if he hurt him or otherwise caused him to have a bad day. Maybe it would be better for our troops to just eliminate these prisoners when they catch up with them. It would solve a lot of problems. If I were a soldier in the field that is the message this nonsense would be sending me. When I was in the Army we were told that it takes only one soldier to kill an enemy but it takes several to handle prisoners. Is that what the High Command wants? Are we prepared to lose any intelligence we may acquire?
Finally I want to say this. Either we are at war or we are not. If we are, then by all means let's get after it and bring it to an end. If we are not, let's just bring all our troops home and call it good. You can't have it both ways. My heartiest congratulations to the Navy Seals for their courage and their fighting ability. May they never face silliness like this again.

APRIL MORON OF THE MONTH
You know how at the local carnivals where certain rides have a height restriction? They post a sign with a line drawn across it to designate the minimum height you must be to ride. To ride you must be this tall. That seems quite effective and lets the operators as well as parents know who should and who shouldn't be riding. What does this have to do with this month's moron of the month, you ask? Well I am going to tell you.
I waited all month to see if anyone could take the honor away from Rep. Hank Johnson, Democrat, Georgia, but alas no one even had a chance. Hank wins hands down. I couldn't make up the story I am about to tell you. I would not even try. I couldn't keep a straight face.
Our selection for this month's moron of the month is Rep. Hank Johnson, two-term Representative from Atlanta, former lawyer and judge, law school graduate, and duly elected by his district. He was chosen for this month's dubious honor for his questioning of an Admiral at a hearing regarding the placement of 8000 more troops on Guam. Johnson, in his arrogant sanctimonious manner, was a questioner at a televised hearing regarding this troop placement. He literally asked the Admiral what would happen if these 8000 more bodies were on the island of Guam if that wouldn't cause the island to tip over, capsize, and the entire population would then slide off into the ocean. I am not making this up. I watched the testimony and could not believe what I was hearing. Apparently Johnson believed that the addition of these new troops would cause an island that is something like twenty-five miles long and about ten miles wide, to just tip over and spill all the residents. This from a college and law school graduate. This from a former judge. This from a duly elected member of Congress. From all indications, Hank Johnson couldn't shine the shoes of the man he was grilling. If the episode wasn't so serious it would be just down right tragic.
This brings me to the matter at the beginning of this column. Shouldn't there be a minimum level of intelligence to serve as a member of Congress? Shouldn't one have to pass some sort of IQ test to see if they are qualified to make laws that affect the entire country? I can see it now. There would be a board with a line drawn showing minimum levels of intelligence. All freshmen Congresspersons would have to meet or exceed the line. I wonder how many would be sent home if that were applied today. Do you remember Cynthia McKinney? She was the Congresswoman who didn't know the difference between Mars and the Moon. She honestly believed we had landed men on Mars and had planted a flag. Fortunately she no longer serves in that august body.
So you say to me, Ron, these people are elected by their constituents, right? Shouldn't that make it okay? To that I can only ask, what does that say about the idiots who voted these morons into office? Do they not care about the level of intelligence of their elected representatives? Do they not care that they are inflicting their morons on the entire country?
It is clear to me that the Founding Fathers never imagined such an event as we have witnessed. They would be as amazed as you and I are.
Once again I don't have any answers. I can only report to you and offer my opinions. One opinion I have is that this and other events like it are causing a number of states to reconsider their position in our union. Arizona has passed a strict new immigration law. Montana is passing new gun legislation. Texas and Oklahoma are pressing forward with state's rights issues which could have dramatic effect on the future of the United States. These states are acting because of the direction in which our country is headed.
We are always going to have to deal with morons. It is just a part of life. It truly gets to be disturbing, however, when they occupy positions of power.
